Come and discover Cobá the ancient Mayan city

March 01, 2019

Staying at Hip Hotel Tulum gives our guests the opportunity of enjoying the best vacations ever. Some may want to spend them relaxing on our gorgeous beach from day one, but for some, coming to Tulum stands an opportunity to explore and enjoy visiting the many wonderful places that can be found in the Riviera Maya, such as the cenotes and the archeological site.

One of the best archaeological sites that we recommend our guests to visit is the ancient Maya city of Coba, a complex of Mayan ruins, buildings, murals and an impressive large pyramid that stands above the beautiful Mayan jungle. Visiting Coba will make you feel like a true explorer.

This set of ancient Mayan buildings are very different from other archaeological sites of the Yucatan Peninsula for many reasons: one of them is the location as it is situated next to 2 natural lakes, something very rare in the peninsula. Also, the site is not as explored and promoted as Chichen Itza or Tulum, so many of the structures and constructions are still covered by the jungle, which makes these ruins a place that triggers your imagination and your inner explorer.

There are many ways to explore the impressive site; you can rent a bicycle, hike through the jungle paths (known as Sacbe or white roads by the ancient Maya people) or even take a taxi bike to move around. All of them will take you to the most important building: the Nohoch Mul temple, one of the highest in the Yucatan (138 feet high) and one of the few that you can actually climb. If you dare, you won’t regret it, as there’s no sensation compared to the magic of witnessing the majestic Mayan jungle from the top.

There are many official guides that you can hire for your convenience, in case you wanna learn more about the fascinating Mayan history and legends. But you can explore by yourself too, as just being in Coba is a truly mystical and wonderful experience.

A visit to Coba may take you up to 3 hours, so our recommendation is that you go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and to make the most out of your day in paradise. Once you’re done with the archaeological site, there’s still plenty of things to do in the area, like visiting some of the amazing cenotes found in the surroundings. There’s no better way to cool yourself after a long walk than swimming in the fresh, crystal waters of these natural sinkholes of exceptional beauty, you may find them pretty close to the archaeological site, which leads us to the next subject: Which is the best way to get there?

Our recommendation is that you rent a car and drive from our gorgeous hotel to the site, which will take you up to 40 minutes. It’s not that far and you can stop for shopping, lunch and visit the cenotes. If driving is not your thing, you can always book a tour to the site, transportation included, from our hotel, our Concierge can help you arrange everything so you get the best tour experience. While there’s public transportation to Coba too, we don’t recommend it as it is a good but slow service and we know you wanna make the most of your time during your vacations in Tulum.

The whole Coba/cenotes experience is a great way to spend the morning, and you’ll be back at Hip Hotel early enough to enjoy tanning on the beach, sipping some great drinks at the bar and keep enjoying the best vacations of your life!
