Giving their life for the beehive – Melipona Bee

August 16, 2019

The only mission of these brave bees is to guard the entrance of the beehive from intruders and invaders, including bees that belong to other hives.

If endangered, the guard bee without even thinking will give its life to protect the community.

Meanwhile, the worker bees will work together as a team and quickly patch the entrance to prevent any kind of invasion. After the guard bee’s death, another bee shall immediately take its place to become the new guard bee, it will be its turn to give his life to the community if needed.

This is what we would call dying for love and compromise”.

Bees are the guardians of nature because they are the most important pollinators that exist. The guardian of the Caribbean, is the melipona bee, native stingless bees that are very sociable insect and used to be sacred for the Mayan culture due to the healing properties of their honey.

As part of our efforts to contribute to preserving this insect, at Hip Hotel, we have placed a “jobón” or “sacred beehive” in front of the garden of our hotel.

With this action, we wish to contribute to the survival of this bee so vital to the ecosystem and representative of the Mayan culture.
