May 23: World Turtle Day

May 15, 2020

Sea turtles in our country are a special symbol of longevity, fertility and good luck; in Mayan culture they were associated with water, land and thunder.

There are seven species of sea turtles and the Caribbean Sea is, since time immemorial, one of the most important spawning and nesting destinations of five of these species. Along the Riviera Maya you can find the species loggerhead, white and lute and, less frequently, the carey.

Sea turtles are a common heritage in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Every year, from May to October, sea turtles arrive from far seas to nest to the beaches and this is why World Turtle Day is celebrated during the month of May.

After an incubation period of about 6-10 weeks, according to the species, baby turtles break the shell and start the tiring path from their nest covered by the sand. Using the natural moonlight, the hatchlings make their way to the sea and start swimming in the direction of the waves.

During this season, every year in Ana and Jose we work hard for the conservation of our species through a nesting program where we protect and care of nests during their development until the time of the release of the new born turtles. We invite you to come in touch with nature and participate with us in this initiative for the conservation of sea turtles!
